Following Japan’s defeat in World War II, the island of Taiwan was returned to China. The Chinese government, the Republic of China (ROC), was quickly overthrown by Mao Zedong’s People’s Revolution, and the new state government was established known as the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Chiang Kai-nationalist shek’s government went into exile on the island, which it continued to rule as the Republic of China (ROC). While the People’s Republic of China (PRC) claims sovereignty over Taiwan, the ROC continues to regard itself as China’s legitimate government on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. However, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was recognized as the legitimate government of China by the UN, and in October 1971 it replaced the Republic of China (ROC) in the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

Tibet was occupied and incorporated into the People’s Republic of China (PRC) following the Battle of Chamdo in 1951, and the previous Tibetan government was abolished in 1959 after a failed uprising.
