The State of Naga Affairs – 2022 Survey Report

The State of Naga Affairs survey was launched in 2022 to gauge Naga people’s views and perceptions of Nagas and geopolitical developments affecting the region, key regional Naga affairs and how the Nagas engaged in the preceding year, and how it looks forward into the future with Strategic/Dialogue Partners.

The survey’s goal is to provide a snapshot of the current prevailing attitudes among the Naga people. The survey is not intended to provide a definitive assessment of Naga affairs. Instead, it is intended to highlight Naga policymakers, academics, researchers, business people, media personnel, civil society activists, and students’ perspectives on a range of issues affecting the Naga Affairs.

This survey was conducted online through the International Council of Naga Affairs web portal from February 18 to February 28, 2022. The survey was conducted in English, and a total of 204 respondents from the Naga Region of India and Myanmar participated.

The survey is divided into seven sections. Section I covers the profile of the respondents by gender, affiliation and age. Section II addresses questions about the Naga region’s outlook and development, as well as COVID-19. Section III focuses on the major powers’ influence as well as the credibility of both Naga Civil Society Organizations and Naga Nationalist Organizations’ leadership. Section IV discusses major powers’ strategic and economic influence in the Naga region, as well as their leadership credibility on global issues. Section V examines Naga’s sentiments and options in the region’s unfolding power competition, particularly the deepening rivalry between China and the United States, as well as the potential benefits and downside risks, broadening strategic options in the event of unsuccessful political negotiations between Naga-India and Naga-Myanmar. Section VI examines the Naga perception of their current identity, the future of Naga identity, and the regional relations approach to resolving the India-Naga-Myanmar political issue. Section VII of the survey concluded with an open question for any additional feedback and suggestions.
