The Shape of the Indo-Naga Political Future: What “Solution”?

Approaches such as the Indo-Naga Framework Agreement of 2015 suggest that, through adroit formulation and a spirit of compromise, many gaps in the main issues are not insurmountable, however, the approaches and tactics to win over another party by using a “no-win” argument, will simply lead to more deadlocks – is what makes the Indo-Naga conflict such a protracted-and perhaps insoluble-issue.

It’s all in the Naga Land Map

It comes at a time when there is much confusion and counterargument about how to read the current position or situation, including the territorial jurisdiction of the Naga people, by both Nagas and non-Nagas. What was in the Mahatma Gandhi-Naga Delegation Meeting of July 19, 1947?

Unfortunately, throughout the Indo-Naga conflicts, there have been numerous examples of how the same events and negotiations can be interpreted in vastly different ways by India and the Naga people. Against this backdrop, it will examine Gandhi’s contested statement to the Naga delegation as per a letter/memorandum sent by A.Z Phizo, President of the Naga National Council (NNC), to the President of the Republic of India on November 1, 1957, and subsequent communications in relation to the letter.

“Behind-the-Table” Conflicts in the Indo-Naga Negotiation

Rethinking the Indo-Naga Political Negotiation

To conduct meaningful Indo-Naga political negotiations, both India and the Nagas may require flexibility, the pragmatism of the highest order, and a thorough understanding of the problems and issues at stake. India and the Naga people must look beyond their primary (immediate) concerns to resolve the more than seven-decade-old issue, and if they are unable to do so, they must consider inviting a third party/country mediator.

Inconsistency has marred Modi’s relations with the Nagas in the quest for an Indo-Naga peace settlement

Inconsistency has also defined the Indo-Naga peace talks since the early 1950s. Rather than simply reaffirming the strength of the Indo-Naga Peace Talks, a renewed engagement of trust and commitment from all negotiating parties is required.
